Welcome to the website for Barbara ML Gordon.
I'm a mostly unpublished writer of fantasy, with forays into mystery and sf.
In 2006 I attended the Viable Paradise writers' workshop. If you want to write sf or fantasy, there's nothing better. For workshops that don't require travel or taking time off, try the Online Writing Workshop, Critters, or Absolute Write.
My first published short story, The King of Elfland's Stepdaughter, can be read at Coyote Wild. Three Coyote Wild stories received honourable mentions in The Year's Best Science Fiction for 2007: The Ladies, by Elizabeth Bear Marsdog, by Beth Bernobich The King of Elfland's Stepdaughter, by Barbara Gordon
My first professional sale, "On the Transmontane Run with the Aerial Mail Express", can be read here at Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
My first novel, The Willow Knot, a retelling of Grimm tale 11, after much revision under my agent's guidance, is somewhere on the desks of various editors. My second novel is The Cost of Silver, a dark fantasy set in Stuart England. It is currently being revised and expanded to include a present-day plotline. Much research has been done, very little of which will reach the page (but may lead to more stories in that setting).
Another Honourable Mention for me in the 3-Day Novel Contest this year, for Doorways. My previous shortlisted titles were Archipelago, Culture Heroes and Fold. I've collected three of my entries at Lulu.com as a free download (pdf) or at-cost print-on-demand.
After my short story "Foretold" won the 2009 Rannu Fund prize for fiction, I was honoured to be one of the fiction judges for the 2010 contest. In 2012, my short story "Gods-Meat" made the shortlist. Congratulations to Rich Larson for his win with "Clockwork", and to the other shortlisted author, Ursula Pflug with "Getting Jade"! My other honourable mention for 2012 (a year of no cigars) was with "Climbing Boys" in the Friends of the Merril Short Story Contest. Congratulations to Sarah Ennals, who took first place with her story "The Emmet"! |
